The universe of EVE Online is no stranger to challenges, but New Eden is currently grappling with an economic crisis that could redefine the way wars are fought—and resources are managed—forever. Inflation and mineral shortages are wreaking havoc, leaving players and alliances struggling to sustain the massive wars that once defined the game.
Mineral Starvation in New Eden
At the heart of the crisis is a scarcity of minerals, a situation exacerbated by CCP’s recent changes to Null-Sec mechanics, production systems, and mining operations. While CCP’s stated goal is to encourage more wars and remove ISK from the game to prevent inflation, many players feel that these changes have backfired, creating conditions that make large-scale conflict unsustainable.
As one player noted:
“Why do I feel like CCP is working against their own game? With mineral shortages across New Eden, how can alliances replace their fleets, let alone wage war on a grand scale?”
A Fight’s Ripple Effect on Jita’s Market
To illustrate the issue, Lithorex provided a detailed breakdown of how a single skirmish can devastate the economy.
Consider the impact of one small-scale fight:
- 20 Revelations destroyed: ~58 million units of Mexallon removed.
- 5 Zirnitras destroyed: ~16 million units gone.
- 5 Phoenixes destroyed: ~14.5 million units erased.
- 2 Moros destroyed: ~5.8 million units lost.
- 1 Naglfar destroyed: ~2.9 million units removed.
In total, just the hulls of these dreadnoughts alone removed about 100 million units of Mexallon—roughly 1/6th of the daily trading volume in The Forge. Factoring in siege modules, weapons, and other fittings, the real mineral loss could be nearly double.
For reference, this single fight destroyed approximately half a day’s worth of Mexallon trading in Jita, the game’s largest market hub. In a mineral-starved economy, such losses are simply not sustainable.
The Cost of a Great War
Now imagine a major battle involving 100 Titans, a not-uncommon scenario in EVE’s storied history. Replacing those Titans would cost an estimated 30 trillion ISK, drawing resources from both High-Sec and Null-Sec economies for an entire month. The question arises: How can alliances continue to support Supercapital fleets and maintain war efforts under these conditions?
A Call for a Roadmap
As players face this economic crisis, many are calling on CCP to provide a clear path forward. A 2025/26 roadmap is urgently needed to address questions about mineral scarcity, economic sustainability, and the future of large-scale warfare in New Eden.
How does CCP envision the game thriving under these conditions? Can the economy recover from this mineral starvation, or will the scarcity drive alliances to abandon the epic wars that define EVE Online?
The answers to these questions will shape the future of New Eden, and players are waiting to see how CCP will respond.
What do you think? Is the current economic model sustainable, or is it time for CCP to rethink its approach?
